Monterrico is a beautiful natural reserve of 2,800 hectares. In this protected area you will find mangrove swamps and there is also a sea turtle sanctuary. You will also see a lot of different migratory as well as local birds.
From July 2008 until March 2009 28,800 turtle eggs were incubated in the Hatchery and 26,277 new born turtles were liberated to the Ocean. In the Hatchery you will also see both caimans and iguanas.
The volcanic, black sand beach is a special attraction in this area. On the beach you can admire extremely beautiful sunrises and sunsets during most mornings and evenings of the year.
Monterrico is most of all a place where you relax, where you leave your daily life behind you. Just to be in the sun, swim in our pool, walk on this special beach, relax in our hammocks, read a good book or...
But, for sure there are some interesting things to do in this natural reserve, like:

1) A tour to the mangroves, to see the richness of this protected area, with its´ nature, the beautiful sunrise, the fishes, the birds and maybe most of all to experience the quietness in this beautiful area in the early morning. It is a tour that lasts about 1.5-2 hours and you start from the hotel about 5-5.20 am depending on the season.

2) Horseback riding on the beach.

3) Visit the Hatchery, which is about one kilometer from the hotel.

4) From July to October you can have a walk on the beach to look for the turtles coming up to lay their eggs. Depending on the climate, the tour starts at 7.30-8.30 pm and lasts about two (2) hours. There are no guarantees that you will see turtles, but when you do it is a very exciting experience…

5) From September to February there is liberation of the new born turtles most every evening at 5.30 pm. By adopting a turtle for 10 Q you can help El Centro de Estudios Conservacionistas CECON-USAC to get funds to buy more eggs.

6) Go fishing in the ocean That is a tour for about 6 hours. To do this tour you have to make a reservation in good time.
